Get direct download link for the videos uploaded in facebook

I often find myself download videos from facebook and I don’t use firefox, chrome extensions as they make browsing slow instead I try to find the direct download link, and in most of the cases I do find them :)

So, here I am sharing how you can grab the direct download link for the videos uploaded directly on facebook.

Sample video uploaded directly to facebook.

single page of the video

step 1. Goto the dedicated page for the video uploaded to the facebook.

– Click on the title of the video and you will be taken to the single page for the video where all the comments for the video appears beneath the video.

step 2. View-Source the page

Then view the source of the page.

Search for .mp4

step 3. Search for .mp4

In the source, search for .mp4, there are just too many .mp4 links stick to the first one that will do the job. After you find the .mp4 link, copy exactly start from https, as shown in above figure exactly to the link where red line ends, just ignore the last three %22%2C%22. After you have copied the text (say links) goto step 4.

See the screenshot below :
Highlight of the text to copy

step 4. copy the path

Visit the http://www.samundra.com.np/facebook-video/ and paste the link you just copied. And hit the “Get Download Link” button. The decoded text will be shown in the text box which is the direct download link for the video uploaded in facebook.

Update (6/7/2015): The easiest way to get the video link is through the “options” button on the facebook video itself. Click on option > select embed video and then copy and paste the source. There you will see the direct video link.

Hope you find it useful.

[Solved] Heroku login problem for heroku facebook app

Heroku provides the free webhosting for facebook applications. If you want to know more about Heroku you can visit their sites. They have very good introduction. From October 1, 2011, see here https://developers.facebook.com/blog/post/497/ Facebook required the https connection for Facebook application and Heroku freely provides it. Great. Thanks to Heroku.

This guide is for Ubuntu only and was prepared with Ubuntu11.10.

Recenlty, I was trying to use the free hosting provided by Heroku. This is something which according to my experience have to say is difficult for newbies. I will suggest to heroku with Ubuntu.

Anyway, the actual that I got while installing heroku was this.

samundra@mystic-angel:~$ heroku login
/home/samundra/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.2-p180/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/custom_require.rb:36:in `require': no such file to load -- readline (LoadError)
	from /home/samundra/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.2-p180/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/custom_require.rb:36:in `require'
	from /home/samundra/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180/gems/heroku-2.29.0/lib/heroku/command/run.rb:1:in `<top (required)>'
	from /home/samundra/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.2-p180/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/custom_require.rb:36:in `require'
	from /home/samundra/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.2-p180/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/custom_require.rb:36:in `require'
	from /home/samundra/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180/gems/heroku-2.29.0/lib/heroku/command.rb:15:in `block in load'
	from /home/samundra/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180/gems/heroku-2.29.0/lib/heroku/command.rb:14:in `each'
	from /home/samundra/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180/gems/heroku-2.29.0/lib/heroku/command.rb:14:in `load'
	from /home/samundra/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180/gems/heroku-2.29.0/lib/heroku/cli.rb:24:in `start'
	from /home/samundra/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180/gems/heroku-2.29.0/bin/heroku:16:in `<top (required)>'
	from /home/samundra/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180/bin/heroku:19:in `load'
	from /home/samundra/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p180/bin/heroku:19:in `
'

The issue is with the readline package used by the heroku. I had ruby1.9.2 which wasn’t compiled with readline.

So, to solve this I first installed the readline package.

samundra@mystic-angel:sudo apt-get install libreadline-dev

Then cd to the directory

samundra@mystic-angel:cd ~/.rvm/src/ruby-1.9.2-p180/ext/readline

and then compiled the extension manually.

samundra@mystic-angel:ruby extconf.rb
samundra@mystic-angel:make install

That’s it. If you are having problem following the instruction, please post them in comment. I will try to reply them as soon as possible.

[Solved] Video playback failed in firefox in ubuntu

This occur when there is conflict in players in firefox for ubuntu.

To remove the conflict install the Flash-Aid plugin for firefox. Get it Here

After installing Flash-Aid run it for the first time, in wizard mode.

This addon will list all the flash player installed in the system. If this list the gnash as installed, then you’ll need to remove it from the system. To do it open the Synaptic Packet Manager.

From the synaptic packet manager uninstall the gnash. And then restart the firefox. Bingo !!! The videos will be played in firefox.

If this doesn’t help you, there might be other flash tools that might be conflicting with each other.

You must know either facebook name of your friend or his email address which is in use in facebook. In most of the cases, we’ll know the facebook name of our friend.

Suppose my friend to whom I want to block has email blockme@hotmail.com, then under email I will enter blockme@hotmail.com and click on “Block This User”.
